The Basic Periodontic Examination (BPE) is a standard for assessing patients that has been motivated by the principle that careful assessment of the periodontal tissues is an essential component of patient management.
In the UK it is required to be carried out annually on every patient.
The BPE window in EXACT is a standard rapid screening tool for indicating the level of examination and treatment required.
Providers historically accessed this BPE window from the Patient Perio tab, but from EXACT v12.6 onwards a BPE button on the patient file toolbar provides an alternative for recording and viewing scores, and it alerts Providers to overdue BPE assessments.
This button / indicator is visible from anywhere in the patient file. The button shows the patient's highest BPE score, and it flashes to indicate when a BPE assessment is overdue for the currently selected patient. Providers can click the button to open a floating BPE window in which to record a patient BPE assessment.
Features
View a BPE score indicator button for the currently selected patient.
This indicator is on the patient file toolbar so is accessible from anywhere in the patient file. Alerts are graded by colour: green > yellow > red, and the indicator flashes when overdue. Examples:
Mouseover the button to see a tooltip summary that includes the BPE grid with scores, bleeding indications and Notes.
Click the button to view the last recorded BPE (enabled for all clinical security groups by default), with the option to record the BPE assessment.
The BPE window is the same as that used in the Perio tab, and the scores recorded here are simultaneously recorded in the Perio tab.
BPE user access rights mirror the Perio tab user access rights. Access is enabled for all clinical security groups by default, but can be edited.
For Providers the alert icon is visible from anywhere in the patient file.
For Receptionists the alert button is visible in the Edit Appointment window toolbar.
BPE conveniently displays patient BPE scores and facilitates BPE assessments.
BPE saves time for Providers, as they can quickly see the patient's worst BPE score, they are alerted to overdue BPE assessments, and they can update a required assessment from anywhere in the patient file.
The BPE status is visible on the toolbar from anywhere in the patient's file.
Providers can record BPE regardless of which tab is currently open for the patient (previously they could only record BPE from the Perio tab).
The constant presence of the BPE icon and its ease-of-use facilitates diligent BPE assessment in the practice.
Requirements
EXACT v12.6 or later.
Access rights - security mirrors that for the Perio tab, and rights are by default enabled for all Provider security groups - see Configuring rights to view and use BPE.
The period for overdue alert must be configured in Configure > Patient File for the flashing alert to function. By default this is 0 months (no alert) - see Configuring BPE
